Although cognitive science in its formative stages dealt with such seemingly-mechanical processes as memory, symbolic thought, and language acquisition, contemporary thinkers such as Fauconnier and Turner are grappling with the more mysterious dimensions of the mind. They suggest that all thought involves the marriage of metaphors which are themselves products of mechanical processes, resulting in blends that each child must negotiate during development.
